ROCK HILL –

Rock Hill police are investigating the shooting death of a woman on Tuesday night.

Elonia Ware, 41, was sitting in a chair in her living room when multiple rounds were fired into the home at 283 Powderhouse Street, said Lt. Brad Redfearn.

Ware was shot just above her left eye and was pronounced dead at the scene, said York County Coroner Sabrina Gast.

Officers responded to the duplex about 7:30 p.m. on reports of gunfire, Redfearn said. Two others were inside the home at the time — Ware’s 20-year-old son and her 51-year-old boyfriend. They were not injured in the shooting.

While a motive hasn’t been established, Redfearn said they do not believe the shooting is a drive-by or random, but that the home was targeted.

Neighbor Maggie Turner, 78, has lived on the street for about 60 years. She said Ware had been her neighbor for at least two years, and whenever she saw her they would say hello to each other.

“She was nice,” Turner said this morning.

Turner was watching TV when she heard gunshots.

“I thought it was firecrackers,” she said. “But it shot about four or five times.”

This is not the first time shots were fired into Ware’s home.

On Dec. 2, Ware was in the duplex with her boyfriend, mother and young grandson when she heard at least three gunshots, according to previous police reports. The bullets entered through the windows, causing about $300 in damage. No one was injured and police never caught the shooter.

Turner said she also heard gunfire in the December incident.

“It scares me,” she said. “The killing over there, we haven’t had that. The neighbors don’t bother anyone. Everyone is nice.”

On Tuesday, a K-9 unit responded but was unable to locate a track.

Police are asking anyone with information to contact the police department at 803-329-7282 or Crimestoppers at 877-409-4321.

This is the third homicide in York County this year, and the second in Rock Hill.

Last week, 64-year-old Alexander Hardin was found dead at his Orr Drive home. Police said he had been assaulted with some type of object and had been there for a few days.

On Jan. 5, Jackie Lashon Craine, a 34-year-old mother of three, was shot to death in Fort Mill by a man police identified as a her ex-boyfriend, James Enrico Diago, 38, who was arrested on murder charges.
